Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module aims to: - give students the basic knowledge and skills needed for online language teaching and blended learning - help students understand how to adapt face-to-face teaching skills to an online environment - help students in planning, organising, developing, delivering and assessing an online language course - offer students examples of best practices of online/blended English language teaching - put design and delivery principles aligned with SLA theories of online teaching and learning into practice.

Syllabus:

Part 1: Theories of E-learning and E-moderating; Connecting theories and blended learning; blended learning and the changing role of teachers and learners; participating in online communities of practice for sharing and collaboration; and the alignment of SLA theory with blended and online learning. Part 2: Teaching the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) online; teaching vocabulary and grammar online; dealing with pronunciation practice and oral output online; addressing error correction online; dealing with classroom management in an online classroom; engaging the online learner; exploring tools and materials- Quizlet, break out rooms etc.; developing web-based courses and materials; online and adaptive assessment; learning how to transfer teaching skills to an online context; and skills needed to be an effective online teacher.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - demonstrate knowledge of e-learning and e-moderating for online language classes - apply knowledge of the theories, skills and strategies required for online/blended teaching - identify the skills required for planning, organising, developing, delivering and assessing an online course - assess various tools to use for online teaching - manage the learning process independently and effectively - produce an online lesson for English language learners.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - demonstrate self-motivation and autonomy - value issues relating to online teaching and learning - participate in online discussions and collaborative activities - engage with online teacher communities of practice for sharing and professional development

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught online both synchronously and asynchronously, where models of good practice can be exemplified. Students will have the opportunity to meet once in the semester for block teaching. The module incorporates graduate attributes by building knowledge, fostering collaboration, and facilitating online interactions.
